Africa Silks-an active silkworm farm

Sharing is caring!

african silkfarm silkwormsAfrica Silks is situated between the two towns of Hazyview and Graskop in the Mpumalanga Province, South Africa. Climate is a very important factor in silk farming and luckily the Kruger Lowveld has the ideal temperatures of between 22°C and 29°C with no frost.

Africa Silks Weavery was opened in Graskop and after much success, seven more branches opened up around the country. In 2003 the new silk farm, previously government owned in the Bushbuckridge area, opened up and welcomed visitors.

On the farm, visitors can take a one-hour tour of the active silk farm. The fascinating process is explained by a local lady who acts as a guide. We were shown the whole process; from how the tiny silkworm cocoons are processed into threads and then used to produce a variety of products from clothing to interior decorating.

The shop on the farm and in Graskop has plenty of silk clothing, silk filled duvets, silk sheets and even skin care products.
On the farm, you can relax after your tour at The Deck Restaurant which serves delicious light meals and refreshments.
