Just a short drive from Hermanus along the scenic Cape Whale Coast, you can explore Gansbaai, a charming seaside village famous for its Great White Shark cage diving and rugged coastal beauty. What was once a quiet fishing town has transformed into one of South Africa’s top adventure destinations — where ocean thrill meets small-town hospitality.

A Glimpse into Gansbaai’s History

The name Gansbaai comes from the Dutch word “Gans,” meaning goose, inspired by the flocks of wild Egyptian geese that gathered around a freshwater spring near the old harbour.

Founded in the late 1800s, Gansbaai began as a humble fishing village. Local fishermen built small cottages along the coast and relied on the sea for their livelihood. Over time, it grew into a tight-knit maritime community, renowned for its boat building, fishing, and ocean expertise.

By the 1990s, as shark cage diving gained global attention, Gansbaai found a new identity as the shark diving capital of the world — blending adventure tourism with a strong focus on marine conservation.

Shark Cage Diving – The Ultimate Adventure

No trip to Gansbaai is complete without experiencing shark cage diving. The waters near Dyer Island and Shark Alley are home to a variety of shark species, including the legendary Great White Shark with White Shark Projects.

Operators in the area offer guided tours where visitors can safely enter a cage and watch these magnificent predators glide effortlessly through the deep blue. Even if you choose to stay on deck, seeing a Great White break the surface is a truly unforgettable sight.

Beyond the thrill, shark diving in Gansbaai supports vital research and education projects dedicated to shark protection and ocean conservation.

The Historic Danger Point Lighthouse

Perched on the cliffs just outside Gansbaai, the Danger Point Lighthouse is one of South Africa’s most iconic coastal landmarks. Built in 1895, it was designed to warn passing ships of the perilous reefs that claimed countless vessels — including the HMS Birkenhead in 1852, a tragedy remembered for the origin of the phrase “Women and Children First.”

Standing 18 metres tall, the lighthouse offers panoramic views of Walker Bay, Dyer Island, and the Atlantic Ocean. It’s a must-visit for anyone exploring the area’s maritime history and dramatic natural scenery.

Getting To Gansbaai

Gansbaai is located about 160 km from Cape Town, roughly a two-hour scenic drive via Hermanus. Visitors can enjoy day trips, but staying overnight in Gansbaai or Kleinbaai allows more time to explore the coastline, join a morning dive, and unwind in a true coastal village atmosphere.
