Bush Baby and Monkey Sanctuary in Hartbeespoort Dam

Bush Baby and Monkey Sanctuary in Hartbeespoort Dam

The 7ha privately owned Bushbaby Monkey Sanctuary in Hartbeespoort Dam is neighbouring the elephant sanctuary in one of the many kloofs of the Magaliesberg mountain range in the North West Province of South Africa

In this one of only eight free-release primate sanctuaries globally, primates find new homes that are funded by donations from the public, guided monkey tours and sales from the quality curios.

Primates such as squirrel, spider and capuchin monkeys who were sadly raised as household pets, or even bred for the pet trade, are introduced to a wild world laden with waterfalls, lush vegetation, and natural mountain springs where they will have the opportunity to live in as natural an environment as possible- just as they would in the wild.

It is their belief that you will only protect what you love and their monkey tours, therefore, aren’t only highly informative but strive to create awareness of the benefits of releasing primates into sanctuaries such as this one. Guests leave the tours with the understanding that monkeys do not make good pets but are better suited and happier in a natural, free-living environment.

The passionate, well-informed guides will take you on an educational monkey tour through the Sanctuary with all its natural splendour – a place bushbabies and monkeys can now call home.
